
Julie Johnston, PhD

Julie is a PhD scientist with over 25 years of professional experience in Microbiology, Virology and Gene Therapy. Julie received her PhD in Microbiology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, Canada and conducted her post-doctoral studies on HIV pathogenesis at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in La Jolla, CA. She joined the Gene Therapy Program at the University of Pennsylvania as a Research Scientist and eventually rose to Executive Director of Vector Operations. As Executive Director, Julie oversaw Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MS&T), Analytical Sciences and Technology (AS&T) and Project Management for Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC). Julie has extensive management skills as well as experience interacting with scientists, industry partners, quality leaders and regulatory authorities. She is an author on 20 peer-reviewed publications and has served on a number of institutional and granting agency committees. Julie has worked as an independent Scientific Consultant and Technical Writer since 2022 and established Cedar Coast Scientific Services in 2023. She currently resides on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada with her husband Howard.
